Vera Duarte was elected to the International Commission of Jurists in 1995 and served as a member of the ICJ's Executive Committee between October 1995 and March 2002. Currently the co-ordinator of the National Committee of Human Rights, Vera Duarte is also a Counsellor to the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, the President of the Women Jurists Association of Cape Verde, and a member of the Forum of Lisbon on the Rights of the Person. A former judge of the Supreme Court of Justice of Cape Verde from 1990 to 1998, Vera Duarte was previously member of the Superior Council of Magistrature from 1989 to 1990, and General Director of the Department of Studies, Legislation and Documentation at the Ministry of Justice of Cape Verde from 1982 to 1985. A member of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights from 1993 to 1999, Vera Duarte was also a member of the Executive Council of the Centre North-South of the Council of Europe from 1995 until 1997. Vera Duarte received her LLB from the University of Lisbon, and completed her Judicial Magistrate Training at the Centre of Judiciary Studies, both in Portugal. A widely published essayist, her work for the promotion and protection of human rights was recognised in 1995 when she won the Lisbon North-South Human Rights Award. She has also published short stories, novels, and poetry. Other publications include: A Candidata, Preces e Súplicas ou os Cânticos da Desesperança, and O Arquipélago da Paixão.
Russell G. Hamilton is Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese at Vanderbilt University specializing in Lusophone African and Brazilian literatures and culture. Hamilton is the author of the books Voices from an Empire: A History of Afro-Portuguese Literature and Literatura Africana, Literatura Necessária (African literature, Necessary Literature), as well as several book chapters, numerous articles and essays published in scholarly journals, most recently "Chronicling from the Center of the Periphery: Estórias Contadas [Tales Told] by Germano Almeida. Although officially retired, Hamilton continues to pursue his research interests in Portugal, Mozambique, Brazil, and Cape Verde. In the near future he plans to write a personal memoir.
