He is an important figure in contemporary Cape Verdean music, literature, and art. He worked as a singer, composer, and guitarist with the now disbanded group Simentera, which aimed to preserve traditional Cape Verdean music while also promoting the development of contemporary styles. He was a co-founder of the Quintal da Música, a performance space and restaurant in the city of Praia. The musical director of the dance group Raíz di Polon, he continues to represent the avant-garde of Cape Verdean music. In addition, he has exhibited his paintings at home and abroad and has published several volumes of poetry and a novel. Other publications include: Nascimento de um Mundo and Adão e Sete Pretas de Fuligem.
Dr. Naomi J. Sutcliffe de Morães began her doctoral studies in Portuguese African literature while working as a technical translator, primarily of engineering texts due to her BS in mechanical engineering. After three years, she switched her area of study to linguistics and enjoys African literature more now that she no longer needs to analyse it. Her current research interests are legal translation and comparative law.
